'Been a long time coming' – Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene were overwhelmed to be able to sign off their T20 careers with a long-awaited trophy after overcoming India in the World T20 final.Sangakkara played the decisive hand in the final with an unbeaten 52 off 35 balls, his first significant contribution of the tournament after four previous innings had brought just 19 runs, and he was delighted to have been able to repay his team-mates while also ending Sri Lanka’s time as bridesmaids in major events since 1996.”It’s been a long time coming, I can’t be happier or prouder,” Sangakkara said. “I think the side carried me so I was pretty happy I could give something back to them. It means a lot to all of us; to me, to our families, to everyone back home.”Jayawardene, who made 24 before finding midwicket which appeared to give India an opening, admitted there had been added emotions around this match”We finally managed to break the jinx,” he said. “Thanks so much to family and friends but this one is for Sri Lanka fans who have been waiting since 1996. It wasn’t a normal match. There were a lot of emotions as this was the last T20. It hasn’t sunk in yet and it will take a couple of days to get the feeling.”Lasith Malinga, Sri Lanka’s captain for the final three matches of the tournament following Dinesh Chandimal’s suspension and then his omission, said the team were desperate to give Sangakkara and Jayawardene a victorious send-off from the format.”I was really lucky to captain in the last three games. Today, we thought it was Sanga and Mahela’s farewell match, the boys thought we needed to do it for them. Last few overs we bowled really well. Mahela and Sanga are world-class batsmen and it was a good opportunity for us to be able to play with them. They are still playing Tests and ODIs and the younger players need to pick all that they can from the two.”

Protests over Pollard leading Barbados

There have been incidents of protests in Barbados over Trinidadian Kieron Pollard’s appointment as captain of the Barbados team for the upcoming Caribbean Premier League

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jul-2013There have been incidents of protests in Barbados over Trinidadian Kieron Pollard’s appointment as captain of the Barbados team for the upcoming Caribbean Premier League. Apart from a “street protest” on Tuesday, as reported by the , former member of parliament Hamilton Lashley has spoken out on the issue. The protests centre around Pollard captaining the team ahead of Barbadians like Dwayne Smith and Kirk Edwards. According to the designer Wayne Cadogan, who led the street protest, said: “I am no Pollard or Smith fan, but I am looking at the principle of the matter.”Lashley, formerly the minister of social transformation, had earlier said: “I have a great difficulty with a Trinidadian captaining the Barbados franchise in the upcoming CPL. They have retained the name Barbados, so I believe a Barbadian like Smith or Edwards should be captain. I feel it is fundamentally and psychologically wrong. It affects the psyche of some Barbadians.”Barbados Tridents are one of two teams, from among six, to have captains from another country. The other is Antigua Hawksbills, who will be led by Jamaican Marlon Samuels.

The opening day of the series was abandoned without a ball bowled in Dunedin as heavy rain swept across the ground shortly after New Zealand had won the toss and put England into bat.Although there were periods when the rain eased off, and occasionally the groundstaff would make it to the middle, further bursts kept ensuring no mopping process was able to start. The umpires called the day off after the tea interval and time will be made up over the remaining days, with a 10am start and late finish, although the forecast is not too promising. The day was dominated by news of Graeme Swann being forced out of the tour for elbow surgery after Monty Panesar had been named in England’s team for this Test. There was also a return for Stuart Broad after his heel problems.Despite the overhead conditions, New Zealand handed a debut to left-arm spinner Bruce Martin instead of playing Ian Butler as a fourth seamer. Butler, who hasn’t played a Test since 2004, was called into the squad after Doug Bracewell was ruled out when he cut his foot on glass as he cleaned up after a party.Martin, 32, was first part of a New Zealand squad in 2000 but did not get another call-up until the tour of South Africa earlier this year.New Zealand 1 Hamish Rutherford, 2 Peter Fulton, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Dean Brownlie, 6 Brendon McCullum (capt), 7 BJ Watling (wk), 8 Tim Southee, 9 Bruce Martin, 11 Neil Wagner, 11 Trent BoultEngland 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Nick Compton, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Joe Root, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Steven Finn, 10 James Anderson, 11 Monty Panesar

Eighteen wickets tumble at Eden

Scorecard
As many as eighteen wickets tumbled on the first day at Eden Gardens as Hyderabad came roaring back after a poor batting performance. Ashish Reddy led the way with 5 for 30 as Hyderabad reduced hosts Bengal to 79 for 8, a deficit of 36 at stumps. Bengal, without their injured captain Manoj Tiwary, fell apart from a comfortable 39 for 1. Only opener Arindam Das resisted with an unbeaten 37 while Nos 4 to 9 registered single-digit scores. Reddy was supported by Anwar Ahmed’s 3 for 30. The hosts had earlier justified their decision to field by running through the Hyderabad line-up in 37.1 overs. Quick bowlers Shami Ahmed and Veer Pratap Singh picked up seven wickets between them while only K Sumanth and Syed Quadri managed to get into the twenties.
Scorecard
Ajinkya Rahane’s fall for 24 was the only sore point for Mumbai as they dominated Saurashtra in Rajkot. Aditya Tare and Wasim Jaffer set the tone when they put on 135 upfront after Rohit Sharma won the toss. Jaffer hit 12 boundaries in his breezy 79. Rahane, released from the Test squad to play Ranji Trophy, went caught behind after getting a start but Tare and Rohit took control. Tare faced 262 balls for his unbeaten 122 while Rohit hit three sixes as he motored to his second fifty of the season, to add to a double century and a hundred.
ScorecardDevendra Bundela and Jalaj Saxena led a reasonable batting show from hosts Madhya Pradesh in Gwalior against Punjab. MP lost Naman Ojha cheaply after being asked to bat, but Saxena, who moved up from the lower-middle order to open the innings, ensured the hosts weren’t bogged down. Saxena made a brisk 84 while Bundela carried on the accumulation with an unbeaten 92. There was a stage when Sandeep Sharma, currently the highest-wicket taker of the season, and Baltej Singh had reduced MP to 199 for 5. But Bundela found another partner in Rahul Bakshi, and the pair had put on 82 by the end of the day’s play.
Scorecard
Shivakant Shukla’s century helped Railways recover from 90 for 3 against defending champions Rajasthan in Bhubaneshwar. The opening partnership was worth 55 after Railways chose to bat at their home ground but Aniket Choudhary’s double-strike, including Railways captain Sanjay Bangar for 4, had them in some trouble. Shukla and Parag Madkaikar, though, settled down to revive the innings. The pair put on 146 before Shukla fell to Manjeet Singh towards the close of play. Madkaikar was unbeaten on a patient 70 with Ashish Yadav for company.

Rehman's six stuns Nottinghamshire

12-Aug-2012
ScorecardAbdur Rehman marked his Clydesdale Bank 40 debut with 6 for 16 – a Somerset record in 40-over cricket – to help them to a five-wicket win over Nottinghamshire at Taunton. The Pakistan left-arm spinner extracted turn and bounce from the pitch as Nottinghamshire struggled to 206 for 9, having been 96 for 1 in the 14th over. Riki Wessels hit 53, Michael Lumb 41 and Graeme White 39 not out.Somerset needed only 29.2 overs to reach their target, Craig Kieswetter leading the way with a rapid 44 and skipper Marcus Trescothick seeing his side home with a responsible 87 not out off 69 balls with 10 fours and a six.Rehman, who was given the new ball, switched ends twice during three spells and made the ball turn with increasing venom. His first victim was Alex Hales, lbw reverse sweeping for 7 with the total on 19.There was no sign of the carnage ahead as Wessels and Lumb put on 77 for the second wicket in good time before Lumb carelessly pulled a to midwicket off Gemaal Hussain. Having switched to the River End, Rehman bowled Wessels middle stump with a ripper that pitched on leg and then had Adam Voges caught at slip by Trescothick for 1.Hussain produced a beauty to clean bowl Chris Read for 10 and it was 133 for 5 in the 25th over. Samit Patel was then caught behind for 22 advancing to drive the left-arm spin of Arul Suppiah.Rehman reverted to the Old Pavilion End to take three more wickets. Steve Mullaney was caught behind and Jake Ball taken at slip by Trescothick, both victims of turn, before Luke Fletcher drove to Steve Kirby at mid-off.That meant the new overseas signing had bettered the previous best 40-over bowling spell by a Somerset player, set by Sir Viv Richards when he took 6 for 24 against Lancashire at Old Trafford in 1983.The home side’s reply was given a whirlwind start by Kieswetter, who smashed four fours and a six off the first five balls of the third over, sent down by Patel. When England’s one-day wicketkeeper departed for 44, Peter Trego smacked 26 off 20 balls to keep the momentum going and all the while Trescothick was building towards his first meaningful score since returning after ankle surgery. He reached his half-century off 30 balls, with seven fours and a six. James Hildreth failed, offering a catch to slip to give White a second wicket on what was proving a good day to bowl left-arm spin, but Jos Buttler contributed 26 to put Somerset on the verge of victory.

Collingwood blow for Durham

Durham have suffered a major blow ahead of their Friends Life t20 campaign with the news that Paul Collingwood will miss at least the next month through injury, the club revealed today.

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Jun-2012Durham have suffered a major blow ahead of their Friends Life t20 campaign with the news that Paul Collingwood will miss at least the next month through injury, the club revealed today.Collingwood, a former England Twenty20 captain, has become something of a Twenty20 specialist since losing his England place. He played for Rajasthan in the 2010 IPL, scoring 203 runs at 40.60 and also represented Perth in the inaugural Big Bash League, helping them reach the final. But Durham will have to make do without him after revealing that he has suffered a broken hand during their Championship match against Warwickshire at Chester-le-Street last week.A first scan was inconclusive but Durham have now confirmed that he will miss the group stages of the FLt20 after an MRI scan on Monday revealed “an undisplaced fracture of his second metacarpal”. His estimated recovery time is put at four to five weeks.Durham are desperate that their ageing side can find consolation in FLt20 after a disastrous start to the Championship season. Regarded as potential title contenders, they are bottom of the table without a win in eight matches as some of their most famous names, such as Steve Harmison and Liam Plunkett, have had a season to forget.
