Leeds heading for disaster with Danny Rose swoop

According to the latest reports, Leeds are keen on bringing in Tottenham defender Danny Rose this summer as they look forward to their first season in the Premier League after more than a decade.

The Daily Star claim that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are keen on bringing some top-flight experience ahead of the new campaign, and has been handed a significant transfer kitty by Andrea Radrizzani to spend.

As well as targeting a move for Everton midfielder Fabian Delph – who could well strike up a great partnership with Kalvin Phillips – the Whites are interested in bringing Rose back to Elland Road as well.

But whilst Leeds could potentially sign Rose for a reasonable fee, he simply isn’t the kind of player he was in his prime at Spurs a few seasons ago.

Such has been his decline, that Jose Mourinho even allowed him to join fellow Premier League side Newcastle on loan. When Spurs were at their best under Mauricio Pochettino, the likes of Rose and Kyle Walker would be flying up and down the left and right-flanks and creating dangerous attacking situations.

But at 30-years-old, his form has dropped off considerably. As per Whoscored, he averaged just 0.3 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in his time on loan with Newcastle this season, and managed only 0.2 crosses per match too.

Compare that to Stuart Dallas, and it becomes clear that Victor Orta would be heading for a £60k-per-week nightmare with Rose.

In Leeds’ Championship-winning season, Dallas averaged 1.7 shots, one key pass, 0.6 dribbles and 0.4 crosses per game, and proved his attacking instincts with five goals and three assists.

Simply put, Rose just isn’t the kind of upgrade that would make a move for the hometown man a necessity. Orta would just be wasting Leeds’ money and letting Bielsa down with a player who isn’t at the required level anymore.

West Brom fans gush over Grady Diangana after his masterclass display

West Bromwich Albion returned to the top of the Championship table with victory over Bristol City at the Hawthorns.

A sublime quartet of goals from Kieran Gibbs, Matheus Pereira, who fired home from a free-kick, Hal Robson-Kanu and Charlie Austin were enough to secure all three points to leapfrog Leeds and open up a seven-point gap to third place.

The Baggies’ opener was just the epitome of how well they have played under Slaven Bilic this season as Grady Diangana found the former Arsenal left-back with a deft backheel from inside the penalty area that had the visiting goalkeeper beaten all ends up.

Diangana’s performance sparked a mass reaction on social media with many supporters in the west Midlands left gushing over the West Ham loan star.

One member of the Albion crowd labelled his showing a ‘masterclass’ while also drawing comparisons to Manchester City superstar Raheem Sterling.

‘Magnificent’ and ‘filthy’ were two other superlatives to describe the 21-year-old while a further fan predicts that they will be facing another Harvey Barnes style heartbreak in January.

Here’s the best of the reaction:

Leeds’ Eddie Nketiah given reason to be fearful

Patrick Bamford is the definition of a marmite figure. You either love him or you hate him, and in the eyes of many supporters at half time on Saturday afternoon, the feeling was one of disdain.

The 26-year-old had struck the post in the opening 45 minutes before being berated by fans over the interval.

At times this term, he’s received staunch criticism but he’s also been applauded for his work rate. However, come full-time at Kenilworth Road, there must have been a feeling of love.

Not only did Bamford open the scoring but he also slid the ball home to win his side the game on 90 minutes.

For someone who hadn’t scored in ten games prior to netting against Blackburn before the international break, his movement oozed of someone with confidence.

The former Middlesbrough man is very much a form player. He bagged four in his first five outings of the season but after a run of dreadful outings, there were calls for Eddie Nketiah to start.

[ad_pod ]

He is still yet to achieve that in the league and he’s made his feelings all too clear. It didn’t seem to matter how poorly Bamford performed, he’d always get the nod.

A recent injury halted his chances just as it looked as though he may be due a run of starts but with his competition for a place in the side now back among the goals, he should be fearful.

The above image is from Bamford’s first goal against the Hatters on Saturday. He took the ball in his stride and then fired it unerringly past James Shea in goal. It was a tidy finish and one that should strike fear into Nketiah’s body.

Coming back from injury is never easy but now it’ll be even harder given Leeds’ number nine is fit and firing.

For Nketiah, his chances of breaking into the team look at an all-time low.

Arsenal star Pépé nets brace that can truly ignite Gunners career

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

After arriving at Arsenal from Lille in a club-record £72m deal during the summer transfer window, expectations would have been understandably high as to what Nicolas Pépé could deliver in his debut Premier League season.

Having scored 22 goals alongside registering 11 assists in 38 Ligue 1 appearances from his final season in France, the Gunners had seemingly signed a potent goalscorer with the potential to ignite their domestic and European prospects.

Yet until Thursday night when he came up against against Vitoria Guimaraes, the Ivorian had not lived up to the expectations that had surrounded his arrival at The Emirates, to his own admission according to The Mirror.

“Of course I knew it would be hard. This is a league totally different to Ligue 1. There is a different intensity. I had to adapt quickly because expectations were high. Unfortunately, that is not what I did at the beginning – but I had the manager’s trust and the players have supported me. I keep working hard.”

It would be hard to debate that self-assessment too; Pépé had just one Arsenal goal to his name after a shock defeat to Sheffield United on Monday night, albeit coupled with three assists, and couldn’t make the difference against the Blades.

On Thursday night, however, a well-struck free-kick from Pépé in the 80th minute saw Arsenal draw level, while another outstanding dead ball strike from the 24-year-old in injury time ensured Unai Emery’s side collected all three points against the Portuguese outfit, and it felt like a moment that has the potential to ignite the forward’s Arsenal career.

Emery had spoken candidly in the week about his summer arrivals needing time, drawing comparisons between Liverpool’s signing of Fabinho and the period of adaptation that is required for new arrivals to the Premier League.

Pépé has now played 12 matches in all competitions for the north London side this season, and we are perhaps now starting to see the full potential of former Lille man and the credentials that encouraged Arsenal to break their transfer record in bringing him to the club.

Given the clinical nature of the club’s main striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who won the Golden Boot accolade from 2018/19, grabbing the headlines has been difficult so far for Pépé – something he would have been understandably accustomed to during his final season in Ligue 1.

Yet after a match-winning brace and a sensational performance, this could prove to be the display that serves as a reminder to Pépé of his unquestionable ability, providing a platform to kick on and impress in his debut Premier League season with the Gunners.

Arsenal purchased their club-record signing to decide games in their favour, and the 24-year-old finally has an example of that to build on. It’s now a case of doing so on a more consistent basis, starting with Arsenal’s home clash against Crystal Palace this Sunday.

Wolves losing Chem Campbell would contradict Fosun’s aims to build from within

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Football Insider, Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund have their eyes on Wolves teenager Chem Campbell.

What’s the word?

The reports suggest that the German club are keen on continuing the trend of bringing young English talent across Europe as seen first-hand with Jadon Sancho, while more recently the likes of Ademola Lookman and Jonjoe Kenny have made similar moves to the Bundesliga.

Wolves are at serious risk of losing the 16-year-old as he is unable to sign professional terms at Molineux until he becomes 17 in December, and by then, he may well have had his head turned by such a big club as they have competed in the Champions League in eight of the last nine seasons.

Campbell is yet to feature for the west Midlands club on the senior stage, but he has clearly caught the eye of manager Nuno Santo after he was invited to train with the first team during pre-season.

He’s also currently playing well above his age group following his promotion to the U23 squad.

Would go against Fosun’s aims

Fosun have made it clear in the past that they would like to build something special at Wolves, and the first stages of that have occurred with the club winning the Championship in 2018 before earning a spot in the Europa League after just one season back in the top-flight.

Nuno’s men romped through the qualifying rounds to make the group stages of the competition, too.

Now the owners want to see the west Midlanders begin to build from within with Morgan Gibbs-White being the only real academy graduate to properly breakthrough in recent years.

The 19-year-old has gone on to make 63 appearances since making his debut aged 16 back in January 2017.

Meanwhile this season, the likes of Taylor Perry and Luke Cundle have been able to feature in the Carabao Cup.

Losing Campbell would be a hammer blow to Fosun’s ambitions considering the Wales U17 international clearly has something about him as he is playing several years above his own age group – if he continues at that rate, he could well be part of the first-team fold before he leaves his teenage years.

The promising starlet has netted twice from midfield in six appearances so far this campaign, per Transfermarkt.

Wolves simply need to tie him down to a professional deal in December if they want to truly stay on track with their academy aims.

Newcastle fans react to Rafa Benitez’s veiled dig at Mike Ashley

Rafa Benitez has made a veiled dig at Mike Ashley in his personal blog about his time managing in China, and his comments have piqued the interest of several Newcastle fans.

After the success of young brothers Sean and Matty Longstaff against Manchester United, the Spaniard spoke of the advantages that can be produced by having an effective academy system.

“I was also happy to see a few Geordies playing together at the same time; Carroll, Sean and Matty; surely it shouldn’t be difficult to see the benefits of investing in the Academy?”

– Rafa Benitez

The Spaniard was responsible for giving Sean Longstaff his Magpies debut but not many other academy players were given a chance in his three-year spell at the club, which has raised questions amongst some supporters.

Some have called out his record, suggesting it is a bit hypocritical of Benitez to criticise Ashley when he too often picked an experienced pro ahead of a youngster.

However, others are in agreement after seeing the success that young players can have, whilst one has praised the former Liverpool boss for calling out Ashley’s youth policy.

Here is some of the reaction on Twitter to Benitez’s comments.

Man Utd fans have their fingers crossed over Glazer family report

Could this be the beginning of the end? Manchester United fans have had to put up with the Glazer family for a number of years now, and every time it has looked even remotely likely they could be heading out, it just hasn’t turned to be the case.

Earlier this year, reports had suggested a Saudi Arabian firm were interested in taking over the Red Devils, but that did not transpire in the end. However, it appears United may be saying goodbye to at least one of the Glazers in the near future.

According to The Sun, Kevin Glazer – son of Malcolm who took control of the club 14 years ago – is “set to cash out” of Old Trafford, after documents were recently filed with the USA’s Securities and Exchange Commission in proof of him converting all his B class shares into A class stock.

The report adds the A shares are available to be traded on the New York Stock Exchange, and that the “only conceivable reason is to sell up”. The Sun further notes however that the move does not necessarily mean the prospect of new owners anytime soon for United.

After hearing the news, Red Devils fans flooded to Twitter, and judging by their reaction, there is a definite sense of hope and wilful optimism that this could potentially lead to some massive change at the top.
