Lehmann appointed Kings XI Punjab coach

Former Australia batsman Darren Lehmann has been appointed the new coach of the IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab. Lehmann has previously coached the now defunct franchise Deccan Chargers, and had played for Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural edition in 2008. He replaces Adam Gilchrist, who was the coach and captain of the Punjab side in the 2012 season.”I’m geared up for the challenges it brings and will always encourage our team to be an entertaining and aggressive brand that people love to watch and associate with,” Lehmann said. “I’m also looking forward to working with Adam Gilchrist again and help all the players grow on and off the field.”Lehmann also coaches Australia’s state side Queensland, and the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League.

Paliwal, Yadav ensure advantage for Services

A round-up of the second day of Ranji Trophy’s Group C matches on December 16, 2012

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Dec-2012
ScorecardRajat Paliwal scored his third century this season to provide Services with a handy first-innings lead against Jammu and Kashmir in Delhi, before their bowlers, led by Suraj Yadav, reduced their opponents to 136 for 6 at stumps, giving them the upper hand. The second day was not as rewarding as the first, on which 16 wickets had fallen, but batsmen didn’t flourish effortlessly either.Resuming at 150 for 6 after having bowled J&K out for 85 on the previous day, Paliwal and Sarabjit Singh stuck together for another 7.3 overs before Sarabjit was out, breaking a 138-run stand. The remaining batsmen couldn’t provide much resistance, and Paliwal struggled to find partners. After scoring 120, his was the final wicket to fall. J&K began positively as their openers put on 40 runs, but wickets started falling thereafter through seamers Suraj Yadav and Nishan Singh, punctuated by small partnerships. Opener Ian Dev Singh featured in four of those, and reached a half-century before being dismissed. At stumps, their team had erased the deficit, but at the cost of six wickets.
ScorecardKerala turned its screws on Tripura by piling a total of 400, led by captain Rohan Prem’s big century, and reducing them to 55 for 4 at stumps on the second day in Agartala. Prem added 65 runs to his overnight score of 105, striking three partnerships, the most prolific one worth 88 with comeback India seamer Sreesanth, who is returning from a rehabilitation following a toe surgery. The duo helped their team reach 400.Their bowlers built on the advantage of the big score by taking early wickets. By the 18th over, four top-order wickets had fallen, all claimed by seamer Unnikrishnan Manukrishnan in his third first-class game. Opener Shubhrajit Roy and Abhijit Dey added 34 runs before close of play.
ScorecardAndhra marginally held the advantage in their battle against Jharkhand, who were taken to a middling score of 257 by their middle-order batsman Saurabh Tiwary, and then milked for 45 overs so Andhra could end the day within 125 runs of the total. Tiwary, unbeaten on 73 overnight, scored a crucial century, and struck a productive stand of 74 with captain Shahbaz Nadeem, who scored a fifty. In reply, Andhra were four down for 54 in the 23rd over, but Amol Muzumdar and AG Pradeep set about rebuilding the innings.
ScorecardIn Porvorim, Goa laid the foundation for a strong first-innings total after bowling Himachal Pradesh out for 338. Their openers had added 58 runs 28.5 overs before the stand was broken, but Asnodkar went on to score a half-century in the company of No. 3 Amogh Sunil Desai, to take his team to 118 for 1 at close of play. This was after their bowlers toiled to end Himachal’s innings. Himachal’s lower order, especially, Rishi Dhawan, Karanveer Singh and No. 10 Rahul Singh stretched their total after they had been reduced to 243 for 8.

Ray Jordon dies aged 75

Ray “Slug” Jordon, the former Victoria wicketkeeper who toured India and South Africa with the Australians in 1969-70, has died at the age of 75

Brydon Coverdale14-Aug-2012Ray “Slug” Jordon, the former Victoria wicketkeeper who toured India and South Africa with the Australians in 1969-70, has died at the age of 75. Jordon, who was well known as a sports commentator and Australian rules football coach as well as for his cricket career, had struggled with ill health since suffering a stroke 13 years ago.As a cricketer, Jordon played 90 first-class matches, mostly for Victoria during an 11-year career, and he was renowned for his work up to the stumps. The former Test fast bowler Max Walker made his Sheffield Shield debut in 1968-69 with Jordon as captain, and he said he would remember Jordon for his “blunt, forthright” nature, as well as his skills as a player.”He was my first captain at Victoria. I guess some people come into your life and they change the way you act and think forever,” Walker told ESPNcricinfo. “The Slug had an amazing way with language. If you were on the opposition side you’d probably reckon his tongue was a bit like a chainsaw. It landed with impact and nothing was sacred or off limits.”It was Jordon’s way with words – and not mincing them – that made him a fine Australian rules coach, particularly at the Under-19 level. It also made him a fascinating commentator, and his association with Walker continued when they were both part of the cricket commentary team for the radio station 2UE after their playing days ended.”On 2UE we had Richie Benaud, Dennis Cometti, Slug Jordon and Max Walker. They were pioneering days,” Walker said. “Richie Benaud and myself would walk out of the television commentary and it was like changing gears, you’d have the images up on screen and then all of a sudden on radio you had to paint the pictures yourself, and Ray Jordon was brilliant at that.”He was the stand-out, a bit like Kerry O’Keeffe is now. What a contrast it was, Slug sitting next to Richie Benaud, but he was never intimidated by anyone in any environment and that’s what we loved him for.”Although Jordon did not play a Test, he came close on the 1969-70 tours of India and South Africa, where he was the reserve gloveman behind Brian Taber. Many years later, Ian Chappell recounted in the book how the captain Bill Lawry had considered picking Jordon in the Test side during the South African leg of that tour, but was persuaded not to by Chappell.Chappell was convinced that during a tour match in India earlier on the same trip, Erapalli Prasanna had been cheated of his wicket when Jordon was standing up to the stumps to the fast-medium bowler Alan Connolly and the ball had bounced off the keeper’s pads and back on to the stumps, and Jordon appealed for bowled.Whether that was what happened remains a matter of debate, but Chappell told Lawry he would not play in the same Test team as Jordon, and Jordon was duly not selected. Connolly, who was a state team-mate of Jordon with Victoria, said his work up to the stumps to pace bowlers was extraordinary.”He was the very, very best keeper of fast-medium bowling on the stumps around. There were no others,” Connolly told ESPNcricinfo. “I bowled to plenty of the other great name keepers but none of them had the courage to be able to stand up to the stumps and put their bones at risk like he did. He had very good hands. That was his forte, keeping up on the stumps and taking medium-pace. We had a very good rapport and he knew my bowling inside out, knew what was coming.”He always had colourful language. Stump-mike wouldn’t have worked with him, it would have had to be turned off all the time. But he really made playing cricket on a 22-yard hard strip of dirt a pleasure.”

Delhi, Mumbai make it to semis

A round-up of the action from the quarter-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2011-12

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Mar-2012Delhi secured a thrilling win over Railways at the Brabourne Stadium to qualify for the semi-final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. After being asked to bat, Delhi were reeling at 43 for 4 before captain Rajat Bhatia came to the rescue. He turned the tide with a century, making 107 including six fours and eight sixes. In the company of Puneet Mehra, he added 73 for the fifth wicket and then, almost on his own, led the surge at the death, helping Delhi reach a challenging 180 for 6.In an impressive all-round effort, Bhatia also picked up two wickets. Railways began steadily in their chase but Delhi hit back, reducing them to 91 for 6 at one stage. Karan Sharma, however, led a lower-order revival, making 67 in 35 balls and keeping his team in the hunt. He added 31 with Rajesh Bishnoi, then 56 with Avinash Yadav. Railways were 178 for 7 with Sharma still at the crease on the penultimate ball of the match, needed three more for victory. But he was caught by Pradeep Sangwan off Mithun Manhas and Yadav was run-out off the final ball attempting the second run which would have, if completed, tied the game. The difference between the teams, in the end, was one run, ensuring Delhi made it through.Mumbai beat Tamil Nadu by 31 runs at the Brabourne Stadium to seal their place in the tournament semi-final. Wasim Jaffer led the way at the top of the order, smashing 51 in 31 balls, adding 86 for the second wicket with Abhishek Nayar, who top-scored with 79. Nayar struck eight fours and four sixes and was the fourth wicket to fall, with the score on 143. Aditya Tare and Ajit Agarkar chipped in with 17 and 15 respectively down the order and Mumbai were able to stretch their score to 193 for 9.TN began well in their chase with openers S Anirudha and Abhinav Mukund adding 62 but a collective bowling effort restrained the team thereafter. Dhawal Kulkarni picked up three wickets and Iqbal Abdulla, Javed Khan and Ankeet Chavan bagged two each. Barring Suresh Kumar’s 49, there was no significant resistance from the middle order and TN were bowled out for 162 in the penultimate over.

Victoria face tough chase for final spot

Victoria were set to face a tricky chase on the third day in Melbourne as their hopes of reaching the Sheffield Shield final hung in the balance at stumps on day two

ScorecardNic Maddinson made a useful half-century•Getty ImagesVictoria were set to face a tricky chase on the third day in Melbourne as their hopes of reaching the Sheffield Shield final hung in the balance at stumps on day two. At the close of play, New South Wales were 6 for 149 in their second innings and already led by 172 runs, with Peter Nevill at the crease on 24 and Steve O’Keefe on 4.The Blues had taken first-innings points after a surprisingly effective spell from the occasional slow-medium bowler Ben Rohrer, a batsman who before this match had not taken a first-class wicket. He picked up 4 for 13, including three wickets in an over, as the Victoria tail collapsed to hand the advantage to New South Wales, who cannot make the final.Rohrer had already picked up the wicket of Andrew McDonald for 23 when he snared his three in five balls to finish the innings and dismiss Victoria for 185. Cameron White had top scored for the Bushrangers with 39 and the debutant Chris Tremain picked up 3 for 61 for the Blues. In their second innings, New South Wales lost Phillip Hughes for a duck in the second over before Nic Maddinson (51) and Usman Khawaja (33) steadied the side. But Peter Siddle collected two wickets and helped Victoria make inroads into the New South Wales line-up and by the close of play Victoria held out some hope of a sub-200 chase, but in a low-scoring game even that didn’t promise to be an easy task.

Unchallenged Pakistan aim for clean sweep

ESPNcricinfo previews the third ODI between Bangladesh and Pakistan in Chittagong

The Preview by Kanishkaa Balachandran05-Dec-2011Match factsTuesday, December 6
Start time 1330 (0730 GMT)Can Nasir Hossain inspire his team to put up a better show?•AFP

Big PictureThe fact that the third ODI is a dead rubber is hardly surprising. There has not been an ounce of competitiveness in each of the three games so far in this tour. Nasir Hossain’s battling century in the second game in Mirpur wasn’t enough to mask the bigger problem for Bangladesh – the batting. The overall reaction among passionate Bangladesh fans, going by feedback received by ESPNcricinfo, was not necessarily that of disappointment, but more specifically, anger. Some went as far as to question Bangladesh’s right to participate at the international level. Their status as a Test nation has always been debated, though now fans have extended that discussion towards their ODI status too. Public memory is short. It’s easy to forget that just over a year ago, Bangladesh thrashed a listless New Zealand 4-0 at home. It’s the failure of the batsmen that has deflated the team. All efforts on the field have been nullified by the top order collapses. They were dismissed for 91 in the first game and in the second, the chase was all but lost at 19 for 4. Bangladesh threw in the towel at that stage. Given the situation, Bangladesh did the best they could to salvage some pride by batting out the 50 overs. It didn’t make a good advertisement for one-day cricket, but in the process they discovered what Nasir is capable of. A bit more support from the top order would’ve been handy though.”The wicket was really good in the last game, but there were several dot balls,” Mahmudullah said. “Shakib and Nasir played well, especially Nasir who has taught us some stuff, like how to be patient against this attack.”There are fewer concerns for Pakistan. However, they didn’t have the best outing in the field for the second match, spilling catches off Nasir and Shakib Al Hasan. Shahid Afridi had a rare off-day with the ball, conceding 49 off 7 overs and failing to take a wicket. The final game gives them a chance to rest a couple of players and give everyone in the squad a chance.Form guideBangladesh: LLWLL (most recent first)
Pakistan: WWWWWIn the spotlight…Since his 128 against India in the 2009 Champions Trophy, Shoaib Malik has gone 14 innings without a fifty, with a highest of 39. He’s been a shadow of the player he was when he was captain, and before. His bowling gives Pakistan another spin option, but he’s in the team primarily as a batsman. After hitting two half-centuries against Australia, Shahriar Nafees has done little of note, with the highest score of 14 in his last five ODIs. He has failed to recreate the kind of form he showed in 2006. It’s been nearly five years since he scored an ODI century.Team newsPakistan are likely to make a couple of changes, dropping Imran Farhat and Sohail Tanvir, and bringing in Asad Shafiq and the left-arm seamer Mohammad Khalil.Pakistan (probable) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Asad Shafiq, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Misbah-ul-Haq, (capt) 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 8 Shahid Afridi, 9 Saeed Ajmal, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Mohammad Khalil.Imrul Kayes is set to miss out due to a groin injury, and will be replaced by Alok Kapali or Naeem Islam. If the pitch takes more turn than the one in Mirpur, Bangladesh could field a spin-heavy attack at the expense of a fast bowler.Bangladesh (probable) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Shahriar Nafees, 3 Alok Kapali/Naeem Islam, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Nasir Hossain, 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Abdur Razzak, 9 Elias Sunny, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Rubel Hossain.Stats and trivia Bangladesh have found boundaries hard to come by at the start of the innings. In the Twenty20, they scored their first in the ninth over, in the first ODI it came in the sixth, but the wait was the longest in the second ODI – it took them 11 overs. Bangladesh have won both their day-night games at this venue, against England and West Indies.Quotes”Some of the youngsters who’ve come into the side have worked hard to make their spot worthy. All of us have set a goal that we will now need to raise the bar.”
“The top order has no clue how to bat, and @ the moment it has left me clueless in regard to what I tweet next.”
“Everyone says this is our lucky ground. Let’s see what it can do for our fortunes. We have some good memories at this ground.

Gayle backs T&T for Champions League success

Chris Gayle has said he thinks West Indies Twenty20 champions Trinidad and Tobago have the potential to win the Champions League Twenty20

Chris Gayle is hoping to duplicate his IPL form in the Champions League•AFP

Chris Gayle may be playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2011 Champions League Twenty20, but he thinks West Indies Twenty20 champions Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) have the potential to win the tournament if they get through the qualifying stage. T&T take on Sri Lanka’s champions Ruhuna on Monday, with three out of the six teams in the qualifier going through to the main draw.”They have been playing good T20 cricket for the last couple of years and can win if they qualify for the main draw,” Gayle told . “It is unfortunate that they have to play in the qualifier. They have been dominant in the Caribbean.”The team have the experience [playing in the Champions League] and know what it is like. Definitely I am confident that they will do well and qualify.”T&T will be without two of their biggest stars – allrounders Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard – who did not take part in the West Indies domestic tournament and have chosen to play for the Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians respectively in the Champions League. But Gayle believes there is enough talent in the T&T squad and the pair will not be missed.”Yes, they definitely can [compete]. I mean you saw it in the regional tournament. Bravo and Pollard did not take part and they actually won it without the two big names.”T&T were the surprise package of the first Champions League, reaching the final before losing to New South Wales, and Gayle said the team would benefit from that experience. “Most of the guys have been there in India and that is good for the team. There is no reason why they cannot do well and win.”Gayle, who is making his Champions Leage debut, said he was looking forward to the tournament and hoped that he could make the same kind of impact as he did in the IPL 2011, where he finished as the top scorer with 608 runs at an average of 67.55 and a strike-rate of 183.13.”It was a massive IPL, “Gayle said. “I took a lot of positives [from it], but the Champions League is a different scenario. There will be different teams we will be playing against and different situations. It is going to be a big good contest amongst the bowlers from the different teams. So I am excited to be a part of it. I want to do well there, just like any other player, and I am looking forward to it, fingers crossed hopefully.”

Gayle announces himself with ton

Chris Gayle smashed his way to his first IPL century, the second fastest in this edition of the competition, and was the architect of Bangalore’s victory over his former team, Kolkata

The Bulletin by Firdose Moonda22-Apr-2011

Chris Gayle made light work of the target of 172, tonking 102 not out off 55 balls•AFP

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsChris Gayle has arrived. He smashed his way to his first IPL century, the second-fastest in this edition of the competition, and was the architect of Bangalore’s victory over his former team, Kolkata. Gayle formed powerful partnerships with Tillakaratne Dilshan and Virat Kohli as Bangalore were untroubled in their chase of 172, winning by nine wickets. The pitch was proving to be tricky for the quicks and Kolkata opted to start with a spinner after having posted 171. Yusuf Pathan, who was battling a knee niggle, opened the bowling. After three good deliveries, Yusuf strayed on the leg stump and Dilshan cashed in with four through square leg. With that, the flood gates were opened. In the fourth over, Gayle had scored just three singles – while Dilshan had notched up 19 – when he was offered a full toss. He drove it down past the non-striker for the first of his 17 boundaries. It didn’t matter what Bangalore tried after that. Jaidev Unadkat was dispatched with disdain as Gayle went down on one knee, smacking him for six over long-on. Shakib Al Hasan was tossed around like a limp ragdoll, slogged over midwicket and mowed over deep square. Yusuf was smoked through the covers. Gayle even showed a touch of deftness, playing one fine to the third man boundary. It didn’t matter who was given the ball, even though spin proved difficult to get away during the Kolkata innings. Manoj Tiwary was slapped over long-on and even mishit for six. Medium pacer Rajat Bhatia was hit for 17 runs in his second over, 16 off Gayle’s bat. At the end of 12 overs, Bangalore were cruising on 123 for 1 when Dilshan was bowled by L Balaji, who controlled the swing admirably. The Gayle force blew on though. Together with Kohli, he brought the required run rate down to less than a run a ball. Kohli was given some room to express himself too, taking advantage of full balls offered by Balaji and showing off his wrist work against Bhatia. Kohli almost had too much fun and denied Gayle a century with a boundary off the first ball of the 18th over, that left Bangalore with just two to win. He blocked out the rest of the over to make amends.Even a wide from Iqbal Abdulla couldn’t stop Gayle, who ended the innings with a smashing shot through the covers, winning the match with 11 balls to spare. Gayle, who was picked up by Bangalore as a replacement for the injured Dirk Nannes, wore a jersey with 333 – his highest Test score – on the back and made light work of a total that Kolkata should have been able to defend.Their innings was held together by a classy 48 from captain Gautam Gambhir, patience from Jacques Kallis and a measured assault by Yusuf.Things started disastrously for Bangalore with Zaheer Khan’s first over going for 19 runs. It consisted of three wides, one of which went for four, and three boundaries, all off the bat of Kallis. Sreenath Aravind fared a little better, his first over going for 14.Daniel Vettori rung in the changes immediately, replacing Khan with left-arm spinner Syed Mohammed. Together with Dilshan, he hauled the run rate back to reasonable 8.33 per over. Mohammed was impressive in his initial two-over spell and was rewarded for tight bowling when Haddin tried to hit him over mid-off but got an edge that Kohli collected at point.Kallis and Gambhir batted with patience against the slower bowlers and unleashed when Khan was brought back in the 11th over. Gayle played a role in the field as well, taking the catch that sent Kallis on his way. Vettori bowled a shorter one which Kallis drove on the up towards extra cover where Gayle dived to his left and plucked the ball out of the sky.Yusuf, batting at four, allowed himself five balls to settle before depositing a Mohammed delivery over long-on. After Gambhir was caught by Dilshan at extra cover, Yusuf unleashed. He destroyed Aravind, pulling the short one for four, smashing the full one for six and dispatching the low full toss to the boundary. The quicks redeemed themselves a bit with Khan bowling a decent last over, mixing up slower balls and yorkers, and Aravind claiming the wicket of Yusuf, who was trying to force the ball over long off but only got it as far as Kohli.
