West Ham’s potential lineup for the trip to Brighton

[ad_pod ]

After an embarrassing start to the campaign in front of their home support, West Ham will be hoping to truly get their season underway with a much more winnable game against Brighton at the Amex Stadium – in comparison to their game against Manchester City, of course.

The Hammers lost 5-0 last weekend, although you can’t really assess how bad they were given the quality of the opposition – the Citizens even put six past Chelsea last term, so it can even happen to the best of clubs.

Whether Manuel Pellegrini decides to tinker with the side who started that game or keep faith with them remains to be seen, but here’s who we think the Chilean will choose to line up against Graham Potter’s men…

As you can see, we think Pellegrini will make a few changes, although they may not be entirely tactical.

Sebastien Haller and Felipe Anderson – both of whom started last weekend – may not be fit for the trip to the coast after picking up knocks against City, meaning that there could be a chance for two new recruits in Pablo Fornals and Albian Ajeti.

Fornals – a £24m signing from Villarreal – came off the bench against City and struggled to get involved in the game, albeit that was probably down to the quality of the opposition rather than through any fault of his own.

You can teach yourself 3 crazy football skills in the video below…

Another new signing in Albian Ajeti, an £8m capture from Basel, may come in for his debut to replace Haller – the 22-year-old scored 15 goals last season.

We think that Pellegrini will keep the faith with Aaron Cresswell at left-back once again despite our view that he should be dropped – the thinking behind that specific point is that it seems unrealistic of the Hammers boss to punish anyone in that backline due to City’s vast attacking qualities, although the Englishman’s lack of defensive contribution was worrying.

Premier League Transfer Roundup: Everton ready Zaha bid, Vallejo talks, West Ham want M’vila

[ad_pod ]

Today’s Premier League transfer roundup brings you three big stories from England’s top tier. Everton prepare to launch their Wilfried Zaha bid amidst rumours that Chelsea are also interested, Wolves enter talks to sign Jesus Vallejo on loan and West Ham eye Yann M’vila.

Everton ready Zaha bid

Report: According to Sky Sports, Everton are set to bid for Crystal Palace’s Zaha. The Toffees will reportedly offer £60m for the Ivory Coast international, plus a player who is so far unnamed. Although the 26-year-old would prefer to stay in London, he would not be against a move to the North-West. The Telegraph is reporting that Chelsea are also keen and may look to bring the former Manchester United winger in next summer once their transfer ban has ended.

Verdict: With the backing of Farhad Moshiri, Everton certainly have the money to launch such an offer for Zaha, but does it make sense from the player’s point of view? The winger will surely want to play at the highest level, which means the Champions League, and not only did the Toffees fail to qualify for any form of European football last season, they also do not look likely to reach Europe’s elite any time soon – they ended up 17 points behind 4th place Tottenham last season. The Chelsea link is interesting. Obviously, they would be unable to bring him in this summer, but a future transfer would be possible. They would be better of waiting until next year before committing themselves, however, as Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic could prove that there is no need for another star wide man to join.

How likely is the deal? 5/10

Wolves in talks for Vallejo loan

Report: BBC Sport is reporting that Wolverhampton Wanderers are in talks with Real Madrid in regards to the potential loan signing of Jesus Vallejo. The 22-year-old joined Los Merengues in 2015 but has so far made only 19 appearances in a Real shirt, with injuries hampering his development.

Verdict: This deal would not come as a surprise. The signing of Eder Militao, which adds to an already strong centre-back pairing of Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos, means that minutes will be hard to come by at the Bernabeu next season and so a move makes sense. With Wolves preparing for a term in the Europa League, which is known for testing squad depth to the limit, the Molineux outfit could do with some new faces at the heart of their defence – the three they currently have are unlikely to be enough to see them through their gruelling schedule. Whether he can actually improve the Premier League side is another question. Whilst Vallejo has slightly better stats from last season than Conor Coady, they are dwarfed by those of Willy Boly, whilst Ryan Bennett also performed at a higher overall level than the former Spain U21 international.

How likely is the deal? 8/10

West Ham interested in M’vila

Report: According to French outlet L’Equipe, West Ham are interested in signing Saint-Etienne midfielder Yann M’vila. The Hammers are one of several teams eyeing a deal for the 29-year-old, who is also being targeted by Crystal Palace and Turkey’s Fenerbahce.

Verdict: The France international is somewhat of a journeyman, having already played for five clubs by the age of 29, so a move back to the Premier League where he previously spent time with Sunderland would fit in with his career so far. Declan Rice and Mark Noble are the only two central midfielders who will realistically receive sustained playing time next season, so the capture of the former Rubin Kazan man would give Manuel Pellegrini an extra option. M’vila does not provide too much in attack – he made just one assist last season, and failed to score – but defensively, he is impressive and would provide good competition for Rice, who also takes up a more pragmatic role.

How likely is the deal? 7/10

Krovinovic and Harper are a sign things could be changing at West Brom

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Rekeem Harper’s future with West Brom seemed to be in doubt for a while.

After it was revealed he’d been offered a new deal in the club’s retained list, it took until beyond the 1st July, when players out of contract usually become a free agent, to finally put pen to paper.

The news will likely have come as a welcome relief to the club who are clearly keen to tie down their best young stars.

Unfortunately for Albion, the same couldn’t be said for Louie Barry who rejected a new deal, but Harper’s contract and the addition of Filip Krovinovic on loan could signal a key change that’s already happening under new manager Slaven Bilic.

On the chalkboard

West Brom’s midfield last season was incredibly one dimensional, boasting players like Gareth Barry, Jake Livermore and Chris Brunt.

It was an area of the pitch that lacked much energy with all three players, barring Livermore now ageing individuals. Barry, at the age of 38, has now left the club, but the two latter names are still embedded within the squad.

Brunt has the ability to pick a pass, claiming six assists last term but beyond that, is nothing more than a steady player.

However, Harper’s new contract and the arrival on a temporary basis of Krovinovic is signalling a key switch.

All of a sudden there is a far more energetic and refreshing feel to the midfield, one which could arguably help drive the club forward in a new era.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

It’s likely that Albion’s new Croatian will play as a number ten whilst their academy graduate could play behind him as a box-to-box midfielder.

As a result, the middle of the park could look far more vibrant for West Brom going into the 2019/20 campaign, particularly if Sam Field is also trusted.

Krovinovic is only 23 whilst Harper is still a teenager, meaning the wheels have already been put in motion for a changing of the guard from the older heads that dominated their failed promotion campaign.

Since Bilic has arrived, there has already been significant losses in regards to the playing staff but those of the experienced members that still remain are unlikely to influence things too much in the future.

Under the ex-Hammers man, a youthful approach looks to be coming to the forefront, and after giving a season to those who came down with the team from the Premier League, it’s now evident that a new form of approach is being taken.

Sunderland have signed the potentially perfect Cattermole replacement

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Sunderland confirmed the signing of three youth prospects this week, and one of them could be the perfect long-term replacement for Lee Cattermole.

What’s the word?

Cattermole is leaving Sunderland this summer after a decade with the club, saying: “I believe it is the right time to find a new challenge.”

The tough-tackling midfielder has of course slowed down with age, but his departure leaves a gaping hole in the centre of the park nonetheless.

It’s not all doom and gloom around the Stadium of Light though, as the Black Cats announced the arrivals of Ruben Sammut, Ahmed Abdelkader and Michael Collins earlier this week.

And Sammut, who has spent over a decade in Chelsea’s academy, has all the tools to fill Cattermole’s shoes.

Watch the best fails from the world of indoor football in the video below…

Who is he?

The 21 year-old is a defensive midfielder, playing with Chelsea’s youth teams since the age of eight. He won three consecutive FA Youth Cups with the Blues between 2014 and 2016 and has also won the UEFA Youth League with the club.

Not only is he highly decorated already, but he is already making noise in his international set-up, making 17 total appearances through Scotland’s youth sides, scoring once.

On the chalkboard

Sammut has limited experienced at the senior level, making just 16 appearances during a loan spell with Falkirk last season.

However, his stats from that spell suggest he is already developing into a fantastic young destroyer in the middle of the park, averaging a whopping 3.8 interceptions per 90 minutes.

This displays excellent reading of the game for such a young player, while he also completed 80% of his passes and 81% of his dribble attempts, per The Chronicle, showing he has the technical ability to progress the ball once he wins it back.

Watch League 1 Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

One area he may need to improve is his goal threat, as even Cattermole learned how to get on the scoresheet in League One. The youngster’s expected goal (xG) average and expected assist (xA) average were both a measly 0.01.

Put simply, this means he is contributing absolutely nothing in the final third.

Still, at 21, with all the mental tools to read the game and play the shielding role in front of the defence, Sammut could make an impact on the first-team sooner rather than later, possibly developing into a tailor-made Cattermole replacement.

Perisic’s Europa League record doesn’t bode well for Wolves if he signs

[ad_pod ]

European football is now firmly in Wolves’ minds for the first time since 1980.

It’s been an incredibly long period for the club and its supporters but next July, they’ll play their second-round qualifying tie against either Crusaders of Northern Ireland or B36 Torshavn of the Faroe Islands.

Neither are particularly glamorous matches but to stand a chance of Europa League glory, they must take their qualifying seriously.

If Wolves go onto reach the final then they will have played 20 matches.

Considering their lack of depth last season that is an enormous task. After all, Nuno Santo only chose to field a total of 21 players in the Premier League last term.

Signings will be required, but they must rethink their strategy if they’re targeting Ivan Perisic.

FC Inter News ran an exclusive last week claiming that Wolves could be in the market for the Croatian.

Watch Wolverhampton Wanderers Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Capped 82 times by his country, the winger was a pivotal part of the side that reached the World Cup final in 2018.

Perisic has been hugely consistent in Serie A over the last four years, finding the net 37 times in total.

On that evidence he’d be a good signing, but if they’re considering him on the basis of finding a pedigreed player who can carry them deep into the Europa League, they must think again.

His record in European competition is alarmingly average, especially for a player who has delivered at international tournaments. In Russia last year he scored three in seven outings.

In the Champions League the 30-year-old has found the net just once in 17 matches though.

As for his Europa League record, it isn’t much better. In 34 games he’s scored only six goals, four of which came in his debut campaign in the competition.

For Club Brugge in 2009/10 he scored four in eight but he’s only found the net twice in the remaining four seasons he’s played in it.

As for assists, he’s laid on a goal for his teammates four times during the periods he’s been playing European football.

With this in mind, he seems an individual that’s more suited to domestic action, something which could obviously help Wolves in the Premier League.

Gareth Bale to Wolves? Wolves Fan TV discuss how ambitious Nuno Espirito Santo will be this summer in the video below…

However, Nuno’s squad and forward line is extremely settled at the moment and switching things around isn’t completely necessary.

If Wolves are going to be pursuing bodies in order to go far in the Europa League, adding players who have perhaps achieved more on the continental stage would be a better idea.

The Best And Worst Kits Ahead Of The 2019/2020 Season

With the 2018/2019 season fast drawing to a close across Europe, many sides are already turning their attention towards the 2019/2020 campaign.

Kits for the new season are designed as far out as 18 months before the start of the season they’re intended for and approved soon after, giving them plenty of time to get leaked to the press.

And with ’19/20 just a couple of months away, this has already happened with the top European clubs, including some of those in the Premier League – the most competitive league in the world.

Some strips are simply stunning and others are just revolting. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a gallery of the most significant leaked and officially-released shirts from around the continent for you and we’ll continually update this article once new ones come to light, so stay tuned for more in the coming months…

Southampton 2019/2020 home

The away kit of Ralph Hassenhuttl’s Southampton was unveiled alongside the home stripe in the week after 2018/2019’s conclusion and it’s an absolute stunner.

Under Armour have really pulled something off here, a dark grey centre with yellow and black trim on the sleeves and a yellow band featuring dark grey stripes along the upper section, with also includes a nifty one-button collar. All complemented nicely by a new LD Sports sponsorship banner in the middle.

Crystal Palace 2019/2020 home

As worn by Roy Hodgson’s players in the final-day thriller against AFC Bournemouth at Selhurst Park, this is the Crystal Palace’s home kit for the 2019/2020 season.

As you can see, the club have finally abandoned the baffling yellow trim that has adorned some of their home shirts in recent years, opting instead for a more traditional white. Apart from this, there’s little else to note about the strip, which displays the trademark blue and red stripes.

Leicester City 2019/2020 home

This official image shows Demarai Gray, Harvey Barnes, Hamza Choudhury and Ben Chilwell wearing Leicester City’s 2018/2019 home shirt, made by Adidas and released in early May.

Whilst the gold stripes are a little arrogant considering the Foxes weren’t Premier League champions this season – forget about 2015/2016 – the chequered design is pleasing.

It certainly gives the rather drab blue season-in-season out home shirt a little more excitement, coupled with the gold stripes running from the neck all the way down the sleeves.

Juventus 2019/2020 home

This official image of the Adidas Juventus home strip for next campaign has been released by the Italian powerhouses this month and it’s certainly something out-of-the-ordinary.

The Old Lady have completely abandoned their traditional black and white stripes, instead opting for a half black, half white design with a bizarre pink stripe running down the middle.

Whilst the effort to produce something a bit different has to be appreciated here, it looks like a bit of mismatch, just look at the sleeves, they need to be swapped around to make this jersey anything close to bearable.

Liverpool 2019/2020 home

Liverpool are one of the many clubs to have already officially unveiled their new home kit for the 2019/2020 term, although it isn’t yet on sale.

The Reds have deserted the collar of 2018/2019 in their home shirts for next season, opting for a traditional dark red design with thin white stripes going downwards from the top, inspired by Bob Paisley’s era.

It’s interesting to note the yellow New Balance logo and Liverpool badge, perhaps intended to match gold Premier League badges on the sleeves. We won’t be seeing them there.

Southampton 2019/2020 home

Southampton are really catching the eye in terms of their kits for next season and why not? It could be a big campaign for the Saints – the first full term under Hasenhuttl after the Austrian has enjoyed a full transfer window to make the squad his own.

Their home shirt is just as attractive as the aesthetically-pleasing away equivalent, sporting a similar design but intertwined with the club’s usual home colours of red, white and black. Plaudits to Under Armour once again.

Leicester City 2019/2020 away (1)

Leicester City’s 2019/2020 first away kit is a bold move by the Foxes, released in the last couple of days along with the second away kit following the unveiling of the home kit.

Using the same design as Germany’s 2018 FIFA World Cup home kit, the strip is an out-there pink and black, a far cry from the safe white, grey and red away kits of recent times at the King Power Stadium.

It also features a three-toned stripe across the upper middle section with a trademark Adidas black stripe across the shoulders. This is a delicious shirt but the Midlands club will be hoping for better fortunes wearing it than the Germans in Russia last summer.

Manchester United 2019/2020 home

The fact that Manchester United have decided to honour their 1999 Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FA Cup treble with their 2019/2020 home kit, unveiled in mid-May, is cringey beyond belief.

The fact that the design, with a darkened Adidas and United badge, is unpleasant makes it even worse, clashing with the Chevrolet and Kohler sponsorship emblems.

Dates of the three cup final wins and the minutes of the goals scored in the Champions League final win over Bayern Munich are also included and make for a shirt that Red Devils will probably love and everyone else will probably hate.

Chelsea 2019/2020 home

The 2019/2020 Chelsea home kit, featured in the above official image, is absolutely disgusting stuff from Nike, who have failed massively in giving the Blues a suitable home shirt.

The print that covers the whole of the jersey is supposed to be inspired by the architecture of Stamford Bridge but has ended up looking more like a child’s scribbles.

It’s a nice thought that the manufacturer had the West Londoners’ famous old home ground in mind when designing the kit, though a plain rush blue strip would have been much better.

Leicester City 2019/2020 away (2)

After blinding performances in the home and first away kits for next season at Leicester City, Adidas have let the side down a little with the Foxes’ second away strip.

An official photo of the top was released after a club shoot ahead of the new campaign, a black and white design as opposed to the blue and gold and pink and black of the home and other away shirts.

In comparison, this one is just bland and a little bit too simplistic for an away kit with a basic black centre alongside white stripes and trim. A boring jersey for the road.

Liverpool fans slate Sturridge despite 5-0 win

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool ran riot on Friday evening against Huddersfield Town to move back atop the Premier League prior to Manchester City’s clash with Burnley on Sunday, but Daniel Sturridge was the victim of quite a bit of fan backlash.

The Reds won 5-0 at Anfield, putting the already-relegated Terriers to the sword to take their tally for the season to 91 points.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are now hoping for a slip from the Premier League champions, who play Burnley, Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion in their run-in. The Reds round off their season with clashes against Newcastle United and Wolves.

Their performance against Huddersfield underlined their intentions, with Naby Keita scoring the opener prior to two braces from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

However, Sturridge endured an evening to forget, having been given a rare start by Klopp.

Per WhoScored, he had just two shots on goal, neither of which were on target, while he had just 30 touches of the ball, noticeably fewer than any other Liverpool player.

He won one aerial duel but was dispossessed three times, and Liverpool fans were quick to slate the former England international’s display on Twitter after the game. Take a look at the best of the reaction below!
