Sheffield United shouldn’t smash their transfer record on McBurnie

[ad_pod ]

According to reports from The Sun, Sheffield United could be about to more than triple their current club record transfer fee in order to sign Oliver McBurnie from Swansea City.

It’s been no secret that the Yorkshire club are pursuing a striker this summer as Gary Madine and Britt Assombalonga have both been linked to the club.

Smashing your transfer record like this is, of course, a huge statement, but one has to think that the money would be better spent on another player.

What’s the story?

The Sun have reported that the Blades want to sign McBurnie and a £15m bid will be coming in for him in the next few days.

Heading into their new season it makes sense for Chris Wilder to want a new striker as there are no proven Premier League goalscorers in the squad, but the Scot may not be the answer.

Look elsewhere

It’s a dangerous game Sheffield United are playing by coming into the Premier League with a frontline which has next to no experience at that level.

Billy Sharp made two appearances in the top-flight with Southampton while David McGoldrick has never played in this division.

McBurnie may well have proven himself to be a top Championship striker in these past two seasons, but that isn’t what the Blades need. Sharp outscored him last season while David McGoldrick won the club’s Player of the Year award. If they wanted a top Championship striker, then they could easily just look among their own ranks.

Check out the transfer rumour that has Sheff Utd fans both drooling and laughing in the video below…

There are multiple instances of top second division strikers flopping in the top-flight. Tammy Abraham has proven himself as one of the best forwards in the division during his loan spells with Bristol City and Aston Villa, but he netted just five times when on loan at Swansea in the Premier League.

The 22-year-old is at risk of falling into this category having never scored in the top-flight. Therefore, the Blades would be better of signing someone with proven top-flight credentials instead.

Get him ASAP: Man United fans urge club to sign Ndidi from Leicester

[ad_pod ]

A number of Manchester United fans have called for their club to secure the signature of Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi ahead of the 2019-20 season.

Ndidi – speaking on international duty with Nigeria – has told Goal.com that he is ‘flattered’ to be linked with a move to Old Trafford, amongst other big clubs, having been mooted as a United target in the past.

The midfielder joined Leicester from Genk in January 2017 and has made 101 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions.

During the 2018-19 campaign, the 22-year-old contributed two goals in 38 Premier League appearances for the former English champions.

United are likely to move for at least one new central midfielder this summer following the departure of Ander Herrera.

And a number of the club’s fans have called for executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to seal Ndidi’s signature in this summer’s transfer window.

Could United be in the hunt for an £85m blockbuster signing this summer? Check out the video below…

Indeed, the midfielder could now become a priority for United with Paul Pogba admitting that he is targeting a move away from Old Trafford ahead of the new campaign.

Sanllehi and Emery can transform Arsenal with organic promotion policy

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal are in dire straits. There are no two ways about it.

This season was meant to be a clean slate, one in which the Gunners were rejuvenated under a new head coach following the reign of Arsene Wenger.

Yet, in typical Arsenal fashion, that came crumbling down. Unai Emery lost his opening two games before embarking on an impressive unbeaten run.

Was this the beginning of a turnaround and shift in Islington? You’d be forgiven for thinking so.

The north London side have improved in the big games this term but there are still some monumental issues that need sorting. To put things simply, this squad needs a significant overhaul.

Of course that isn’t completely feasible, but if the club are to go anywhere over the next few years there needs to be a drastic change in policy.

After losing the Europa League final, Arsenal will now have a reported £45m to spend. £45m for a club of the Gunners’ stature is simply not good enough.

This is a club which, alongside Manchester United, reigned supreme at the start of the millennium. To see both teams in such a state is a sad indication of just how far they’ve been left behind since their two legendary managers decided to leave.

Arsenal weren’t good enough for many years under Wenger, that isn’t a secret to anybody. But at the moment, there is a distinct lack of the identity the Frenchman built. Over the last 12 months, it’s all but been eradicated.

Arsenal’s Director of Football, Raul Sanllehi, once of Barcelona, spoke a good game in an interview post-season about recruitment but actions speak louder than words.

If the Gunners’ summer wasn’t already big enough, then losing to Chelsea on Wednesday has only put their need to improve on a higher pedestal.

Sanllehi is primarily tasked with the club’s transfer business and this summer he’ll have to get things spot on. He and Emery need to identify the right targets, but before the club can go any further their defence needs stripping down to its bare bones.

Sokratis and Laurent Koscielny are both ageing central defenders whilst the less said about Shkodran Mustafi the better. Sead Kolasinac and Nacho Monreal, meanwhile, both showed how toothless they can be in the Europa League final.

Those who should remain are two men who have spent a considerable period of time out with injury – Hector Bellerin and Rob Holding.

And therein lies the solution. Arsenal’s younger players need to be at the centre of any rebuild that takes place this summer and this should particularly be the case in forward areas.

Ryan Fraser has been the subject of reports which first originated in April suggesting he could move to the Emirates Stadium, but spending money on him fails to make much sense when there is an alarming amount of work to do in defensive areas.

As a result, the money needs to be spent there. Yes, Arsenal have had problems in wide areas but that pales into insignificance in comparison to the shambolic nature of their backline.

On Wednesday we saw all the evidence we needed of just how insipid Mesut Ozil can be on the big occasion. Substituted at 4-1 down in a major final for 19-year-old Joe Willock showed that his days at the club are surely numbered.

Willock was impressive when he came on and despite missing a simple chance, proved why he needs to play a part next term after a cameo full of energy.

It may be a stretch to suggest he can be Aaron Ramsey’s replacement, but in terms of the runs he makes to the edge of the area he’s certainly someone who can benefit from the Welshman’s departure.

The talented midfielder is solution number one to saving Sanllehi and Emery money this summer.

Other solutions fall in those also rising through the academy. Considering Arsenal’s lack of wingers, loaning out Emile Smith-Rowe in January was questionable. He showed in the early stages of the Europa League what he’s capable of and next season he simply has to play a more meaningful part.

The same can be said of Reiss Nelson. Despite being disciplined by Julian Nagelsmann at Hoffenheim in March, he had a breakthrough season on loan in the Bundesliga.

The 19-year-old scored seven times across 29 matches. Over that time he only started on five occasions but his goals tally shows the tremendous potential he has.

Boasting similar traits to Jadon Sancho, he is a player who needs to be at the centre of Arsenal’s rebuild.

He and Smith Rowe are two of the brightest talents to come through the club’s academy since Jack Wilshere, whilst you also have the likes of Bukayo Saka and Xavier Amaechi – both of whom were included among the party who travelled to Baku. Two further wingers, they are individuals who can go a long way to solving the lack of options in that area.

Bearing that in mind, it would be foolish of the Arsenal hierarchy to ignore what at the moment is a flourishing academy.

Sanllehi will need to save all the money he can this summer. With a minimal transfer budget, promoting from within needs to be the plan.

Their policy should no longer be about stop-gap signings. This side won’t be back at the top level for a number of years.

Instead, their attention should be on a long-term project, one which is built around those coming up through the club. That way an identity can be uncovered.

So far under Emery, we haven’t been able to distinguish truly what he wants to do. That has to change.

Arsenal: Markus Schubert is the ideal replacement for Petr Cech

The Europa League final is set to be one of Arsenal’s most important games in a very long time.

Win, and the Gunners land themselves a spot in the Champions League for the first time in two seasons and an injection of cash that Unai Emery desperately needs in order to improve the squad over the summer. Lose, and Arsenal return to step one in their quest to return to European’s elite competition and face a summer of cheap signings and mass player sales.

But the final will also be a sombre one, in large part because of Petr Cech.

The veteran goalkeeper is in line to make his final ever appearance in professional football in Baku against the team he made his name at, and with Cech retiring the Gunners are in need of a new backup at the club, and a recent name could prove to be the answer.

According to Bild, Arsenal are interested in Dynamo Dresden goalkeeper Markus Schubert, who will be leaving the East German side this season on a free when his deal with the 2.Bundesliga side runs out.

A first-team player since the age of 18, the Germany U-21 keeper has made a name for himself in Germany in the past two seasons as a player with the potential to one day represent the senior national team. And, Schubert, who is valued at £900,000 on Transfermarkt, would prove to be an excellent addition this summer for the Gunners.

At 20-years-old, the German is in the early days of his footballing career yet already has enough experience in a respected league to be a suitable backup option for Arsenal next season. And, playing understudy to Bernd Leno, Schubert will be learning from not only a fellow countryman but also a keeper who has proven to be one of the best in England this campaign.

Cech has had a lasting impact on the Premier League and at Arsenal, but in Schubert, the Gunners will have a keeper who can take the goalkeeping great’s place on the bench and one day be a successor to Leno in the future.

Arsenal fans, would Schubert be a good replacement for Cech? Let us know!

The Verdict: Should Southampton dive in for Harry Wilson?

[ad_pod ]

Per The Daily Star, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton are involved in a six-way race to land exciting young Liverpool attacker Harry Wilson, who is ready to leave Anfield after a thrilling season of first-team football at Derby County.

The attacking midfielder couldn’t quite fire his side to the Premier League but featured for the Rams in last Monday’s playoff final, an eventual 2-1 loss to Aston Villa.

Throughout the season, the 22-year-old bagged 16 goals and four assists in 43 Championship appearances, building upon the previous term’s impressive haul of ten goal involvements from 13 games during a short stint with Hull City in the same division.

The Saints will battle it out with Premier League rivals Crystal Palace, Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion and Hertha Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt from the Bundesliga for the signature of the young Championship sensation.

But what do Football FanCast’s writers think of Southampton’s chase? Four of them share their thoughts below…

Ben Goodwin

“When you consider some of the fees that have been tossed around by Premier League sides in recent years, £25m for a 22 year-old with 20 goal involvements in 40 Championship starts this season is an absolute no-brainer. Ralph Hasenhuttl has turned Nathan Redmond, an exciting wide man with poor end product, into a new and improved, more clinical player. Just imagine what he’d do with Wilson, who already has the end product and is just missing the chance to put it all together consistently at the top level.”

Billy Meyers

“If he becomes a realistic target for the Saints, then a swoop for Wilson wouldn’t be a bad move. However, it definitely shouldn’t be a priority signing. A goalscorer and a real colossus at centre-back is what Hasenhuttl’s side need, not wasting £25m on an unproven youngster.”

Southampton fans may love Ralph Hasenhuttl but do the owners? Check out the video below…

James Beavis

“You only need to take a quick look at Redmond’s development this season to see the merits of Wilson moving to Southampton. Hasenhuttl is clearly a brilliant coach and there’s no doubt he could turn the Liverpool academy product into another Redmond success story. He’s blessed with all the attributes needed to thrive at the top level and with the right guidance he could be a valuable weapon for the Saints.”

Christy Malyan

“I’m surprised Liverpool aren’t intent on keeping Wilson. He’s still got much to add to his game but his record in the Championship speaks for itself and surely the next stage for Jurgen Klopp’s team is to start integrating more academy talents. With that in mind, he’d be a fantastic investment for Southampton, especially under the guidance of Hasenhuttl. Many have made the Redmond comparison already but I see Wilson almost as another James Ward-Prowse – someone the Saints boss can encourage a steely tenacity in to match the obvious flair and technical ability.”

Predicted XI: The positions Sheffield United need to strengthen upon promotion

[ad_pod ]

Promotion to the Premier League brings about a huge cash injection along with the necessity to strengthen.

Sheffield United have gone up with largely the same squad that won League One in 2017, but it is time for some of those players to step aside to allow new talent to come in, whilst others have earnt their shot at proving themselves in the top flight.

Who retains their spot?

Dean Henderson: Chris Wilder should do everything in his power to bring him back. The Blades have been linked heavily and it seems just a matter of time before the keeper returns.

Enda Stevens: Has transformed into one of the best wing-backs in the Championship and there aren’t many players available that can do what he does in terms of covering ground and getting assists.

Jack O’Connell: Looks the most ready-made Premier League player in this side, vital to Wilder’s system.

John Egan: The club-record signing  is now arguably worth treble what they paid for him. Been incredible all year and could easily make the step up.

Oliver Norwood: Promoted three times in three years with different clubs each time. Untested in the top flight but surely worth a chance due to his incredible record in the second tier.

John Fleck: The man who makes Sheffield United tick, arguably their most important player and certainly able to make the step up.

Billy Sharp: Top scorer, club legend, and captain. Sharp has never been given a fair shake in the top flight but with his natural instincts as a striker he could easily hit double figures next year.

Which positions need filling?

CB: Although Chris Basham has had a fantastic season he is the weak link in a defence that the Blades will want to improve.

RWB: George Baldock and Kieron Freeman have rotated in this position. Nobody has made this spot their own so a new wing-back will certainly be inbound.

AM: Mark Duffy has been good this season but he isn’t Premier League quality. Wilder will need to improve in this spot if his team are going to stay up.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he often received racist abuse after North London Derbies – Check out the video below…

CF: David McGoldrick won the club’s Player of the Year award but just 12 months ago he was released from Ipswich. He could regress back into being that player and injury problems could also return. A new striker has to be a priority for the club.

The Verdict: Is Che Adams the man to solve Everton’s striker shortage?

[ad_pod ]

According to Football Insider, Everton are lining up a £15million bid for Birmingham City striker Che Adams, who has bagged 22 goals and three assists in the Championship this season.

Everton could certainly do with some added firepower for next season; Cenk Tosun has quite simply failed to convince since being brought in by Sam Allardyce, Richarlison is better out wide and Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still learning his trade.

So, is the 22-year-old the solution to Everton’s striker shortage? Football FanCast’s writers give their verdicts below…

Billy Meyers

“If the chance to sign Adams arises for Everton, they have to take it. The Birmingham striker is bullish, hard-working and a deadly finisher, and is also the same age as Calvert-Lewin. One thing that Calvert-Lewin lacks is the knack of scoring consistently, so Adams’ arrival would help the academy graduate’s game develop and would also provide Marco Silva with an immediate answer to his team’s lack of cutting edge.”

James Beavis

“I really like this kid. It might be early days but he seems to have everything and actually reminds me of Troy Deeney in terms of his style. The power and goalscoring ability he has is impressive, but it is his character that perhaps shines through the most. Able to find the net regularly and cause opposition defences plenty of problems with his work rate and strength, it would be a no-brainer for Everton to bring the talented Championship in. He certainly has all of the makings of a future Goodison Park hero.”

Ben Goodwin

“If Everton want to develop a young, homegrown talent instead of going out and finding their number nine with a big marquee signing, then their focus should be on Calvert-Lewin. The youngster does absolutely everything a number nine should do except score goals, but at 22 he is finally starting to show a knack of getting in the right places at the right times, so those goals will surely come as Silva’s players become more and more familiar with his attacking system.”

Jack Saville

“Adams could be an unlikely replacement for Romelu Lukaku. Everton have failed to sign a player of the calibre needed to fill the Belgian’s goal scoring void, and the Toffees will continue to stagnate until they do so. The 22-year-old ticks all the boxes for Marcel Brands and Silva: he is a prolific finisher, naturally strong and quick, English, bursting with potential and an intelligent link-up player. Fans would need to be patient during the transition period from Championship to top-flight football, but he could light up Goodison Park once he’s settled in.”

Sign him up: Everton fans want Andre Gomes on permanent deal

[ad_pod ]

The Everton fans have once again been on social media calling for their club to sign Andre Gomes on a permanent deal in this summer’s transfer window.

Gomes joined Everton on loan from Barcelona ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

The Portugal international did not make his debut for the Toffees until the middle of October due to an injury, but has been a regular since.

As it stands, the midfielder will head back to Barcelona this summer.

However, the Everton supporters are hopeful that director of football Marcel Brands might be able to secure a permanent deal for the 25-year-old.

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

It does appear that the Toffees will spend big this summer in a bid to improve on what has been a largely frustrating campaign.

However, Gomes – contracted to Barcelona until the summer of 2021 – might well have other options after impressing at Goodison.

Priceless: Everton fans offer their views on transfer report surrounding Idrissa Gueye

[ad_pod ]

According to the London Evening Standard, Manchester United are considering a summer swoop for Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

Gueye was strongly linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain during the latter stages of the January transfer window, but Everton ultimately kept hold of him.

More rumours have surfaced, though, and it appears that the Toffees face a battle to keep hold of the 29-year-old at the end of the season.

The Merseyside club’s fans have been on social media reacting to the report.

Whilst a number are desperate for their side to keep hold of Gueye, others have picked a price that they would be happy to sell at this summer.
